Disaster Recovery?

Recommended Posts

And its STILL not sorted SSP Outage

More press coverage - but be warned - ".... It's not the supplier that's regulated, it's the broker" So who will the FCA come down on? Not LW that's #4sure

NB - This applies to everything and everyone. It's YOUR Disaster Recovery Policy - no-one else's

Sad but true

Thoughts?

We upgraded our OpenGi Server last month - whilst the cloud option was being heavily promoted, we stuck with on-site hardware and a robust on and off-site backup facility on the advice of an external I.T Consultant.

The SSP debarcle has just backed up (pun intended) our decision to give cloud a miss this time round.

There seems to be a lot of smoke and mirrors in the press at the minute regarding what has actually happened at SSP and is the brokers data safeguarded. I wonder why services couldn't continue via a second back-up cloud server?

I for one wouldn't cherish the thought of the FCA questioning my Disaster Recovery Policy for something 'out of my control' but as you say, the responsibility lies with the Broker.

I expect there will be discussions between SSP users and their legal advisors...

Computers, can't live with 'em...

Darren out of interest how do you achieve the offsite backup?

Hi Colm,

We purchased two Netgear NAS Drives - effectively a box with 5x 1TB hard disks in each. Data is duplicated on all 5 drives as a failsafe for drive failure.

One NAS drive stays on site and is connected to our LAN, the other sits off-site (at a colleagues house) and again is connected to the internet via his modem/router. As you appear to have two offices, you could have a drive at each that back up to each other.

We installed a piece of software called Memeo which is constantly looking for file additions and changes throughout the day on our document imaging database (Virtual Cabinet) and backs them up to the NAS drive on site in almost real-time.

You can also add any other directories to Memeo you want backing up.

I don't think its possible to back up OpenGI in real-time when sessions are running.

When our overnight OpenGI schedule starts we have the OpenGI system back up firstly to tape drive on the OpenGI Server and immediately afterwards it sends a copy to Memeo and the on-site NAS drive. The Netgear Hardware comes with a piece of software called ReadyNAS Replicate and this then sends a copy of the backup from the onsite NAS Drive to the off-site one.

The overnight replicate takes less than an hour but both drives are connected to Fibre internet providers. Time will depend on file size and both your upload and download speeds.

OpenGI can help you set up the special overnight processing to send a file each day overnight. We have a separate file for each working day of the week and opted to overwrite them on a weekly basis.

Our IT chap is based here in York and probably wouldn't be able to travel across to you but at least you could speak to someone locally and tell them how we do it.

Hope that helps

    • December 2018 Welcome to Issue No.40 First off, let's start by acknowledging what a great year it has been for the User Group.  We've improved again our relationship with the key operators within Open GI and at the same time been able to make a real difference to our Members. Our recent AGM saw us welcome in a new Vice-Chairman, Tracey Filtness of Coast Insurance.  Tracey has been on the Committee for a number of years already and her knowledge, experience and cool head under pressure will really benefit the Executive.  Full details of your Committee can be found in this Newsletter should you ever want to contact us directly! The AGM was tied into this year's Members Day which I feel was the most successful one I've been involved in so far.  Hat's off to the long suffering Barbara Pena, who once again pulled the rabbit out of the hat and chose the perfect venue for the event.  There's a recap of the day in the Newsletter, so check out what made this event so special. Also, take a moment to see the benefits of Membership, with exclusive discounts from the Open GI Sales Team.  Maybe now is the time to upgrade your system and get some advice from other Users on our Forum.  That's just another great reason to sign up for Forum Access, here. So, grab a coffee and take 5 minutes to see why being a User Group Member is so important and remember, we're here for you.    Marc Pons-Burt - National Chairman   Committee Meeting Highlights - October 2018   The Open GI User Group Committee met with Open GI Limited on the 9th October, 2018, for one of their quarterly meetings to exchange feedback and raise issues and queries.  A summary of the Minutes has been produced for your information.

    • Hi Pete,   We use Truckwriter, and it has never prompted us, they just run out !. having said that while we don't do bucket loads of CV business on EDI, majority of our providers have set the number range at 999999. Is it by any chance Aviva that needs them doing ?, as last week we had to "TRY" and update and issue some new Aviva policy numbers (first time for years) and we still are trying to sort it !, the Truckwriter POS software was confused, all messed up, Aviva didnt know how top reset using RMA commands.   And agree with Mark, it is not connected with Open Suite, it must just be a coincidence.   Happy days.
    • Hi Pete   Don't know the specifics for TW products as I'm not a low level user operationally   I'll nudge @Philr as he is a top bloke on these things and hopefully he can clarify   PS - I'd be surprised if this is anything to do with OpenSuite as they're not related
    • Hi Guys   on PC policys  the signons will get warnings about the certs going low  giving me time to ring/email the insurers asking for release numbers  before running out.  But on TW (Truck Writer) OpenGI are saying that no warnings for certs and you will only find out when your out.  I cant remember this happening before we upgraded to 5.82
    • You should have #96 in Prospect Control so all new prospects are checked when created.   You can also set under #97 to also check when converted.    Also, #98 is where you set how often you want prospects rechecked during batch checks.   We recheck all clients every 30 days.
